Christy & Emily: Live at Klangbad Festival

Documentary, Music
Filmed on August 5, 2011 at the Klangbad Festival curated by Hans Joachim Irmler (founding member of the band Faust) in one continuous 64 min long take.
Christine Edwards and Emily Manzo are two singers from New York, who also play piano and electric guitar full of reverb. Their heart-warming songs create a wonderful mood - only interrupted now and again by gruff punk-interludes that arrive just in time to rescue things from becoming too celebratory. Compact, infectious and soulful urban folk. Their album "No rest", released in the same year on the Klangbad label, got rave reviews around the globe - with NME giving it four points out of five.
In 2010, Brooklyn based duo Christy & Emily released their third record No Rest, which was produced by Hans Joachim Irmler at Klangbad Studios in Scheer, Germany. Here’s the story of how it all came about:
Back in 2007 Christy & Emily were about to release their debut album, Gueen’s Head, on New York label The Social Registry and they were booked to open for the legendary Nightingales. For those who don’t know the legend of the Nightingales, they are the brain spawn of Robert Lloyd, infamous Birmingham native and John Peel favorite. He had been on the scene since 1977 with a band called The Prefects, who played with all the heavy hitters: The Clash, Buzzcocks, The Slits. The Prefects matured into the Nightingales during the 80’s, and when NY DJ Dan Selzer reissued the old Prefects canon, he booked them a tour in the US and got them a show in Brooklyn. Enter Christy & Emily.
One wouldn’t think that a post-punker like Lloyd would dig two girls singing intimate songs, but they floored him. He waltzed up to them after their show and said, “Will you come to Europe with me?”
Fast forward to August 2008. Christy & Emily play the Klangbad festival, three days of every kind of music one can drink in with German lager, all curated by Hans Joachim Irmler, the mastermind keyboardist of prog rock staple Faust. Christy & Emily play to a large crowd; open-mouthed, silent, listening, mesmerized by the duo’s enchanting dynamic. After the festival, Irmler invite C&E to his studio to record a brand new album for his label, Klangbad. No Rest is that album.

play loud! (live) music series
CONCEPT BEHIND THE SERIES
The “play loud! (live) music series“ is based on three precepts: Alan Lomax´s work as an archivist and chronicler, John Peel´s BBC radio sessions, and the work of Direct Cinema pioneers, such as the Maysles Brothers, Leacock, Wildenhahn, Blank and Pennebacker.
play loud! aims to create an extensive archive of interesting popular music and culture that includes both material from the filmmakers' large amount of unreleased footage and material from other sources.
play loud!’s music films have been called raw, rough, canny, straightforward, adventurous, witty, insightful, direct, non-tricksy, minimal, unpretentious handheld camera work, artful film paintings, minimalist filmed paintings, painted films…
Some of the live performances are filmed with only one camera in one continuous shot and without any edits.
“When we film live shows, we don't use a TV style, but one that is very personal, intuitive and playful. Nothing is staged for the shoot. You go along with whatever happens.” (Dietmar Post)
Streaming offers everyone- fans, researchers, journalists- the opportunity to access the archive and support the use of the material by others. Paying a small fee to view the material helps to cover the immense costs of a private archive.
If there is great demand, some of the recordings will be made available on vinyl.
"Shooting live music is the most purely cinematic thing you can do." (Jonathan Demme)
